Dutch painter (b. 1594, Haarlem, d. 1680, Haarlem). Dutch still-life painter. His excellent studies of tables laden with food, called ontbijt still life, are seen in many important European galleries. LONGHI, Alessandro
Italian painter, Venetian school (b. 1733, Venezia, d. 1813, Venezia). Painter, engraver and writer, son of (1) Pietro Longhi. He must have received his first artistic training from his father, although the only evidence of this is the similarity of their styles. He was apprenticed to Giuseppe Nogari, one of the better Venetian portrait painters of the first half of the eighteenth century, and his earliest works are bust-length, mostly life-size portraits in Nogari's style. Johann anton ramboux
German, 1790 - 1866 German painter, draughtsman and museum curator. He was taught drawing by Jean-Henri Gilson (1741-1809), before he went to Paris for further training in the studio of Jacques-Louis David. In 1812 he returned to Trier, painting portraits until 1815, when he spent a year at the Akademie der Bildenden K?nste in Munich. In 1816 he went to Rome, where he was part of the Nazarene circle without becoming a member of the Lukasbr?der. Close association with these artists, notably Peter Cornelius, Carl Philipp Fohr and Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld, had a more lasting influence on Ramboux's artistic development than his earlier studies with David
William Dyce
1806-1864 Scottish painter, educationalist, theorist and designer. The son of a lecturer in medicine at Marischal College, Aberdeen, he studied medicine and theology, obtaining his Master's degree in 1823. Episcopalian by upbringing, Dyce was expected, like his cousin, the scholar and bibliophile Alexander Dyce (1798-1869), to proceed to Oxford to take orders. His early interest in art found an outlet in portraiture, his first commission being Sir James M. D. M'Grigor (1823; U. Aberdeen). His first attempt at history painting, The Infant Hercules Strangling the Serpents sent by Juno to Destroy Him (1824; Edinburgh, N.G.), much influenced by Reynolds, was shown to Sir Thomas Lawrence, who is said to have encouraged Dyce to enter the Royal Academy Schools in 1825.
